What is Swimming Pool Heating?

Swimming pool is a popular demand for many luxury homes, apartment and hotels. Most pools would require heating system to regulate water temperature to a comfortable level that we enjoy.

Heating is one of important investment consideration for below ground swimming and requires careful design for best way to heat the pool economically.

Poorly design, fossil-fuel based heating can consume a lot of energy and eventually add up to a relatively high heating bills.

Why swimming pool get cold?

Many clients perceive that majority heat would wasted away into soil. This is obvious assumption because surrounding soil has average temperature of roughly 10°C.

Now we face the facts, for most modern pools, the heat losses into soils only account for roughly 10%.

Where are the remaining 90% heats losses occur?

The answer actually lies to the pool surface, where the water is exposed to the outdoor elements.

Heat Losses Factors

The heat loss occurs in the following forms:

  1. Evaporation process is most significant losses:
  2.

    • Heated water at the pool surface dissolved into dry air. During this process, it cools the heated water (similar effects as sweating from your skins).
    •

    • Evaporated water requires refilling; hence, the cold water from the tap would need to be reheated.

  3. Radiation process removes pool surface heat into the surrounding air.
  4.

  5. Convection process is the result of cool air blowing over the pool surface.
  6.

  7. There are several other losses, such as splash factor, etc

As soon as you heats the swimming pool to a desired temperature (typically 27°C-28°C), it start to lose heat into environment, mostly by evaporation process. The pool heater must be sufficiently sized to exceeds that heat losses as well as bringing pool temperature to a desired level.

The heat losses can be significantly reduced by using a well designed pool cover as well as reducing heating cost by a installation of solar thermal heating. In this way, it makes significant payback return, after all, the solar heating energy is free!.

While the pool cover benefits reduced heat losses, the pool heater can be downsized by factor of two. This mean a significant saving from the installation and equipment cost.

Outdoor & Indoor Swimming Pool

Outdoor swimming pool come into two forms, above-ground or below-ground. The above ground may be temporary or permanent pool that sit above the garden, while the below ground is permanent pool, constructed within the garden surface as the picture show below:

Above ground temporary pool with pool cover                   Below ground pool with pool cover

Indoor swimming pool enjoy all the luxurious benefits for all-season swimming, regardless of outdoor weather.

What is the most cost effective way to heat the pool?

We now demonstrate why solar heating is a most cost effective solution:-

TexSun Collector

This is unglazed solar panel technology, which is based on low cost polymer material. It well suited for outdoor pools.

Solar Panel Collector

This is glazed solar panel, which made of glass and metal. It has superior heat transfer performance and can provide all season heating for both indoor, outdoor swimming pool as well as hot water supply.

Electrical Element

This come with cheapest installation but come with high operating cost, due to soaring electricity tariffs. It no longer popular for many proprietor.

Heat Pump (Air Source)

This extract heat from the airs and provide heating for the pool.

Gas Heater

This is fossil fuel based heater which come with high operating cost and availability issue (ie lack of gas pipeline in remote area)

You can significantly reduce swimming pool heating costs by installing a solar thermal panel. Solar pool heating is the most cost-effective use of solar energy over other heating solution and has relatively low maintenance cost.

Remember :

Solar Thermal Panels and Ground Source Heat Pump have a lowest greenhouse gas emission, hence it is the most natural way to heat your swimming pool.

Swimming Pool Cover: Essential

Pool cover is a durable plastic sheet that covers the pool. It designed to reduce heat losses when not in use, protect pool from garden debris, reduce pool chemical use and reduce water losses (hence reduce reheating cost).

The pool cover is designed to prevent evaporation from occurring. It can reduce heating demand by 50% but ordinary pool cover does not necessary heat pools.

In addition, depending on design and quality of the pool cover, it becomes a horizontal safety fence which reduce a risk of drowning by children playing around the pool.

The quality of the pool cover and convenience of use, ie willing to do work to cover the pool when it is not used are important design factor for swimming pool project. Automated opening and closing of pool cover with a simple flick of a switch is a most desirable feature.

The above picture is a revolutionary pool cover with embedded polymer solar panel from Texsun X-Cover!. For more information, refer to our Texsun website:

To summarize, the pool cover has the following benefits:

Conserve water by reducing the amount of make-up water needed by 30%–50%.
Reduce the pool's chemical consumption by 35%–60%
Reduce cleaning time by keeping dirt and other debris out of the pool.
Energy saving by preventing evaporation process from occurring.
Reduces overall heating demands, hence reduces heating installation cost.
  Enhanced safety from children drowning.

The difference between glazed and unglazed solar panel

Glazed Solar panel is made of glass and metal plate or tube, while the unglazed solar panel is made of UV resistance flexible polymer sheet.

While the unglazed solar panel provide cheaper installation, it operates only during the swimming season between May and September. The glazed solar panel provides all season heating including winter season.

Unglazed solar panel (Texsun):
