We have published new booklet "The Heat Pump Guide 2008" which cover greater details about heat pump technology, please click here to open the PDF booklet.
Ground Source Heat Pump
Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are electrically powered systems that tap the energy of the greatest solar collector in existence: the earth formation!
The earth surface formation absorbs almost 50% of all solar energy (from the Sun) and at certain depth has a nearly constant temperature for all season. The GSHP system is a best technology that taps this energy to provide heating, cooling, and hot water for any type of homes and commercial buildings.
When operating in heating mode, it transfers the heat from a ground source into a building (Fig 1).
Fig-1
The above operation has the following sequence:
(a) Free heat is absorbed into water within buried pipe network. The temperature is about 10°C. (b) The heat pump use a small electricity to process heat from the ground pipe to provide heated water of temperature between 40°C- 60°C. (c) The heated water is then dispensed into underfloor heating which keep building warm. It can supply hot water for bathroom or kitchen.
When operating in cooling mode, the process is reversed, transferring heat within the building into ground formation.
What is basic component of the GSHP system?
The system contains three components:
(a) Ground Source Pipes network, buried under the ground. (b) Heat Pump that does all the works. It about a size of washing machine or tall fridge/freezer unit depending on configuration (as the picture shown below). (c) Heating system based on under floor heating or HVAC system with an optional hot water storage tank.
The heat pump can be fitted in kitchen, garage, large cupboard or under floor basement.
GSHP system versa other heating solution
The GSHP requires small electricity to operate the heat pump system, however, as the Fig 3 shown below, the GSHP offer lowest monthly bill. In addition, the greenhouse gas emission (CO2) in Fig 4 makes the GSHP a most environmental friendly.

How the GSHP system reduce my energy bills?
As an illustration, consider a building with two different heating installations (assuming freezing winter):
Case (a) plug in electric heater system (common practice in most Bulgaria housing)
Case (b) GSHP with under floor heating system
List of benefit of our GSHP technology
What is the installation cost?
Due to diversity of the house design, plot size and type of ground formation as well as design of the central heating installation and hot water supply, you be surprise it not expensive as you may think.
For new house, we requires the following documents or details:-
(a) Geologist report, which provide us some information about soil formation to determine most economical solution for ground pipe network. (b) Architect drawing of the house, which address the installation of the heat pump equipment and central heating system. The drawing should includes detail of installation layer. (c) Choice of central heating system:- underfloor, fan-coils heater or HVAC (air ducts). We can offer professional advice on such a diverse subject.
And we make a preliminary offer without obligation. Upon acceptance and an initial deposit, we formalize the project into detailed reports and drawing along with a formal offer.
For those seeking to upgrade existing building with GSHP, we recommend applying for energy audit assessment before we consider preliminary offer.
Ground Pipe Network
Ground pipe network as shown below is designed to transfer heat between soil formations and the GSHP, there are various methods of transferring heat depending on a type of ground formation, a size of the plots and the installation cost.
Below picture illustrates three different ground loop networks:-
Well design ground pipe network is critical to ensure it has proper capacity to cope with heat transfer operation regardless to any season. We take great cares to ensure ground pipe network complies to the installation guideline based on ISGHPA and ASHRAE.
Prokoncept building technology can reduce installation cost!
With combination of downsizing measure, the overall installation cost reduces a potential saving of several hundreds euros. This also mean, the ground pipe network can now be smaller, easier to fits into smaller plot of land.
This is the reason why we encourage proprietor to incorporates energy efficient design when considering new construction project. In this way, the combination of Prokoncept and GSHP system would be a step closer towards eco-home and consequently becoming a greenest building in Bulgaria!.
Prokoncept building technology is a proven technology around the world and it becoming more popular as it being recognized as most cost effective way to comply energy efficiency regulation.

GSHP versa Solar Heating for Central Heating/Cooling System
The heating capacity of the solar thermal is much less than the GSHP and may not always provide sufficient heating during winter season. For an economic reason, solar thermal system work best for hot water supply and swimming pool heating. During winter, the solar energy from the sun is roughly 2-3 time less than summer season.
Earth formation contains near infinite thermal energy, hence with proper ground pipe network design, the heat energy can be extracted by GSHP system and provide you all the heating needs for the central heating system, hot water supply or swimming pool regardless to season.
