Air Source Heat Pump

Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) works in similar principle as the Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP), the key difference that an ASHP will source or sink heats energy from the outside air.

 

An air-source heat pump can provide efficient heating and cooling for your home, especially if you live in a warm climate. When properly installed, an air-source heat pump can deliver one-and-a-half to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes.

 

For a larger building, HVAC (air ducts) is normally connected to ASHP module, but remains less efficient than a GSHP.

 

The performance difference between ASHP and GSHP

2ASHP work harder to compensate temperature variation of the outdoor air over the season. In contrast to the GSHP, the earth formation temperature is more stable. Of this, the ASHP will operate less efficiency than the GHSP. They tend to performs poorly during sub-freezing temperatures and during hot summer days.

 

The picture on the left is a wall mounted heat exchanger (or inverter), where it use a large fan to push air and transfers thermal energy within the unit.

 

Note that the air conditioner is poorly mounted as it becomes an obstruction to the public footpath. EnergyFree Technology will take this consideration on how it mounted in relation to environment and to public safety.

 

3The heat exchange connects to an indoor air circulator module which chill or heat air as indicated left. As is provides thermally conditioned air, it does not replace stale air with fresh air as well as regulating humidity.

 

Where comfort living become an essential requirement, we recommends HVAC solution attached to either ASHP or GSHP.

 

The ASHP rely on large air circulation fan to push the airs into heat pump circuit, it is generally nosier than GSHP

Two different type of ASHP

Air to Water ASHP: This type use water to circulates heat (or cooling) into building with HVAC, underfloor heating or fan coils modules. This is commonly used for large house with HVAC, hotel, apartment block or any type of commerial/industrial building (picture left is an example).

 

Split System ASHP: This type rely on a refrigerant to transfer heat (or cooling) between two seperates units, one mounted outside and one mounted inside as the picture shown above. The disadvantage is higher operating cost (than the manufcature claims) during cooling operation. The efficiency depends on air flow, installation quality and can be nosiy if poorly mounted.

Beware of cheap air conditioner and dodgy installer!

Warranty issue

Be very wary with installers offering ultra cheap installation job. The quality of the installation work tends to be less than bare minimum manufacture installation requirement. In fact, if thing goes wrong, the warranty will only cover defective equipments as long you proves the installation job is done by competance installer. The warranty automatically become void by the time you hired cheap installer. Furthermore, if thing goes wrong, will they honor appointments to investigate the problem and fix it?, do they leave you business card with telephone number?. Do they give you invoice and warranty card?

 

Poor quality job

We have come across some cases, where they have not correctly filled refrigerant or use illegal type (ie R22). Poor installation job actually degrades the efficiency performance due to restricted air flow (mounted too close to wall), incorrect refrigerant and other issue such as noise and poor security (an annoying vibration that keep you awake during the night). We found one installation that has electrical wire shorted between earth and netural, which is illegal and very unsafe.

 

Messy job

Very often, installer leave a terrible mess on the way the cable is mounted in the wall. They leave large holes between two units, damaged plaster board and so on. If they asked to clean up, they may say "is not our job to clean up the mess" and "you have to pay extra for better job", so in end of the day, you pay extra which become false economy with cheap installer's service.

 

Low efficiency performance

Many cheap air conditioners is more likely to feature poor efficiency performance (less than D rating in EU's energy efficiency chart). They more likely to break down within few years and become unserviceable so you may end up paying for replace of the units. Our advice is to try spend a little more for a reputable manufacture with EU's energy efficiency rating to A or B as well as reputable installer like us. They're better investment because they lower the maintenance lifecycle and further reduces energy bill as well as CO2 greenhouse gas emission.

Poor planning leads to excessive number of air conditioner installation as the picture shown left. This spoil the appearance of the building and lead to higher maintenance cost, operating cost and safety issue.

 

We recommend a single units such as Gattelli MCE unit that handle all the heating and cooling operation for all rooms. Due to well estabished company, the lifetime maintenance cost is very low. Alternatively GSHP might be more economical option. With a single unit, it is more aesthetically acceptable and safer.

 

If the installer offer you an installation quote but did not actually inspects the building, we advise to walk away from them as you more likely end up with all sort of problems.

ASHP with HVAC (air ducts system)

ASHP is widely used for HVAC systems which provide fresh air, humidity control, heating and cooling: a full climatic control system.

ASHP with Fan Coils Module

Why we're selling ASHP as well as GSHP

In some cases, the GSHP system installation may not be economical or/and practical solution for a given location and environment. For example, it is not fesiable to install GSHP to providing space heating/cooling for the apartment block at the top of the building(!).

 

With a commercial building such as hotel and apartment block, investor may prefers ASHP due to lower installation cost, however should consider long term lifetime and operating, maintenance cost where GSHP is more likely to be a preferred choice.

 

The picture on the right is the EU's energy efficiency performance benchmark label. We recommend to go further and invest for most energy efficienct equipment. It can make long term saving while the fossil fuel and electricity price may soar higher.

Is manufacture performance specification realistic?

Most manufacture provides a standard benchmark performance information under a lab condition. It is used to compares performance between competitor products and provide energy efficency rating (ie A rating for most energy efficient). The performance indicator does not alway reflects the actual use due to different outdoor environment depending on location. The performance efficiency also depends quite significantly on quality of installation and placement of the module within a restricted space.
